Floating

About the Beachlands Series: all of these paintings are based on reality. I saw things. I saw beautiful birds, fish, and animals, trees and ferns and wildflowers, even in the dead of winter. That's Florida! Oh, I love the place, though I shouldn't. I was born and raised in the Midwest. I was reared a stern and stodgy person, no touch, no love, no nonsense. The wilds of Florida let slip the mask, let play the green glory of perpetual sunshine and rolling waves, and Jupiter rising with the moon. All seems primordial there. The Beachlands Series seeks to capture the youth of life, the connection with nature and the soil, and amphibians! All things are possible. It was the last state tamed, the last refuge of native people, and still it retains that flavor.

One of my favorite natural beaches is on the Atlantic side in Central Florida. The coast and several miles inland, including an intercostal river, are protected. No buildings, few paved roads, and plenty of scrubby woods and fishing for everyone in this worldly paradise.

The Wood Stork has become a focal point for many of the Beachlands paintings. The inspiration comes from my real life encounter with five of the endangered birds deep in the very forest where I am pictured below. They were congregating in this stream, plucking little fish from their shallow habitat. Unfortunately, I disturbed them and caused their hasty flight into the trees. All of my art is based on actual experiences.
